One of the most iconic baby accessories is the stocking hat! This free stocking hat knitting pattern is quick and easy to knit and will make an adorable baby shower gift or new baby gift.

Abbreviations
CO: cast on
K: Knit
P: Purl
K2tog: knit two stitches together as one (decrease)
BO: bind off
PM: place marker St: stitch
Notes
1. Directions are written for a ribbed brim section (as pictured in the black and white photo). If you’d prefer a rolled brim (as pictured in the color photo), work the first set of rounds for each size by knitting every stitch (instead of K2, P2). This will give you a stockinette fabric and the rolled brim, as shown in the second picture.
2. You may also adjust the length of the “tail” portion of the hat. If you’d like it shorter or longer, work fewer or more rounds of that section. The tail section is the last part of the hat that is worked.
3. Please check your gauge, and adjust your needle size according, to achieve the correct gauge.

Approximately 2.75-3/sts per inch in stockinette stitch

Free Baby Hat Knitting Pattern
newborn to 3 months
CO 36 sts evenly onto double-pointed needles. Being careful not to twist sts, join in the round.
Round 1-4: *K2, P2; repeat from * around. (36 sts)
Round 5-16: Knit in each st around. (36 sts)
(Note: this is where you can change the length of the hat. If you’d like it longer or shorter, work more or fewer rounds.)
Round 17: *K4, k2tog; repeat from * around. (30 sts)Round 18: Knit in each st around. (30 sts)
Round 19: *K3, k2tog; repeat from * around. (24 sts)
Round 20: Knit in each st around. (24 sts)
Round 21: *K2, k2tog; repeat from * around. (18 sts)
Round 22: Knit in each st around. (18 sts)
Round 23: *K1, k2tog; repeat from * around. (12 sts)
Round 24: *K2, k2tog; repeat from * around. (9 sts)
Continue working in remaining 9 sts.
Knit each st around until the “tube” is approximately 12 inches long, or your desired length.
Bind off. Weave in ends.
