Looking for a super cute and fun project for a new baby gift, or photography prop? The latest addition to my free pattern collection is an adorable free hooded cocoon crochet pattern. It has a great lacy texture, but not in a super feminine way, so it can also be used for boys. Let’s get started!
Free Hooded Cocoon Crochet Pattern
Supplies
Chunky Weight Yarn (yarn pictured is Sensations Angel Hair)
Size L Crochet Hook
Tapestry Needle
Abbreviations
Ch: chain
St: stitch
Sl: slip
Dc: double crochet
See my Crochet Stitches Guide for step by step directions to the most common crochet stitches.
An ad-free printable PDF version of this pattern is also available. :)
Here is another hooded cocoon crochet pattern, that uses a super bulky weight yarn and includes crochet patterns for a flower and leaves for an optional embellishment! It can also be found in my Etsy shop here. Both are instant downloads!
Size
Newborn (approximately 20-inch length & 13-inch circumference).
Gauge
Approximately 2.25 sts/inch.
Notes
- Chain 2 at the beginning of rounds does not count as a stitch. When joining at the end of rounds, join to first stitch.
- This cocoon has a very stretchy, lacy nature to it, therefore exact size and gauge is not extremely important.
Baby Hooded Cocoon
With L hook, ch 3.
Round 1: 12dc in 2nd ch from hook. Join. (12 sts)
Round 2: Ch 2. 2dc in same st, *2dc in next st; repeat from * around. Join. (24 sts)
Round 3: Ch 2. Dc in same st, dc in next 2 sts, 2dc in next st, *dc in next 3 sts, 2dc in next st; repeat from * around. Join. (30 sts)
Round 4-16: Ch 2. Dc in same st, *dc in next st; repeat from * around. Join. (30 sts)
NOTE: This is where you can add or subtract length from the main part of the cocoon. If you’d like it shorter or longer, work fewer or more rounds. Keep in mind that it has a stretchy quality to it.
From this point on, you will be working back and forth in rows.
Row 17: Ch 2. Dc in same st, dc in next 18 sts. Ch 2, turn. (19 sts)
Row 18-23: *Dc in next st; repeat from * across. (19 sts)
Do not fasten off.
Take the top edge of the hood section that you’ve just finished, and fold it in half. Using the yarn that is still attached, and working through both sides of the fabric, slip stitch the seam closed forming the top part of the hood.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
NEVER LEAVE A BABY UNATTENDED WHILE WEARING THIS PIECE.

I’m so excited to make these baby items. I pray over them. And pass them to the nursery at church.
