Row 2-5: Dc in each st across. Ch 2, turn. (56 sts)
At the end of row 5, do not chain 2, but chain 1.
Row 6: Sl st in next 17 sts. Dc in same st, and dc in next 23 sts. Leave the remaining 16 sts unworked. Ch 2, turn. (24 sts)

Make another piece exactly like the first.
Assembly
The directions that I give, and use for my sweaters, indicate using a basic whip stitch for the seaming/sewing. You can also use a crochet slip stitch, or a single crochet stitch, to sew the pieces together. However, I find that those other options leave the seams very noticeable and stiff. I much prefer the basic whip stitch because it is fairly invisible and not stiff.
Match the two pieces together so that the edges line up. Using a yarn needle and matching yarn, sew the seams together as follows:
Top Arm Seams: Measure a head opening, centered at the top front of the sweater, that is approximately 4 inches long (or desired width). Beginning at one side of the opening, work the whip stitch the top arm seam all the way to the wrist. Cut yarn and weave in ends. Repeat for the other side.
Bottom Arm & Side Seams: Beginning at the bottom edge of the wrist of the sweater, sew along the arm and down the side. Cut yarn and weave in ends. Repeat for the other side.

is it possible to make this baby sweater for a 5 yr. old using more chains to start & using a larger hook & hdc or sc stitches? any help would be greatly appreciated.

This sweater is so adorable and really easy to do. I have made a few for friends new babies and they were loved. I would love to make one for a toddler, how would you suggest for me to increase the size. I was thinking of adding 8 stiches.

First love the pattern, however I’m using baby yarn would I still make 56 stitches.
Posh Patterns says
Hi, Gail!
I’m glad you’re enjoying the pattern. :-)
If you use a yarn that is a different weight/size than the yarn that is suggested, you will have to use a different number of stitches. For example, if you use a baby weight yarn but use the same number of stitches shown in the pattern, the sweater will turn out much smaller because the yarn is smaller. To use the pattern as it is written, you should use the yarn weight that is suggested also.
Let me know if you have any other questions and I’ll be happy to answer them!
