Abbreviations

Ch: chain
St: stitch
Hdc: half double crochet
Hdc2tog: half double crochet next 2 stitches together (decrease)
BLO: back loop only

Gauge

Approximately 2-2.5 stitches per inch in half double crochet

Note

1. The chain 1 stitches at the beginning of rounds/rows do not count as a stitch. When joining at the end of rounds, join to the first stitch.
2. You can adjust how slouchy the hat is. The pattern will indicate where that adjustment can be made.

Elegant Slouchy Hat Crochet Pattern

Adult

Band (size K hook)

Chain 8.

Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook, *hdc in next st; repeat from * across.

Row 2: Ch 1. *Hdc in BLO of next st; repeat from * across. (7 sts)

Repeat row 2 until band measures 21″ slightly stretched.

DO NOT FASTEN OFF.

Bring two short ends together, and seam them together using single crochet stitches. Turn the seam to the inside.

Hat (size L hook)

Round 1: Ch 1. Work 44 hdc evenly around one edge of the band. Join to first st. (44 sts)

Round 2: Ch 1. Hdc in same st, *hdc in next st; repeat from * around. Join. (44 sts)

Repeat round 2 until hat measure 8-9 inches.

{Note} This is where you can adjust the length of the hat, and how slouchy it is. If you’d like it more or less slouchy, work it to the desired length.

Decrease Rounds

Round 1: Ch 1. Hdc in same st, hdc in next st, hdc2tog, *hdc in next 2 sts, hdc2tog; repeat from * around. Join. (33 sts)

Round 2: Ch 1. Hdc in same st, hdc2tog, *hdc in next st, hdc2tog; repeat from * around. Join. (22 sts)

Round 3: Ch 1. *Hdc2tog; repeat from * around. Join. (11 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a tail to close the top.

Weave yarn tail through remaining sts and pull tight.

Weave in ends.

Optional: Using matching yarn, tightly secure a button to the ribbed portion of the hat for a cute embellishment.
