Gauge
Approximately 3.5-4 stitches per inch, worked in double crochet in BLO or FLO.
Note
-
This hat is worked lengthwise (from the bottom edge to the top).
-
You will work the hat until the desired circumference (or the circumference suggested), allowing you to make it the exact size that you’d like.
-
Due to this hat being worked lengthwise, and being able to determine the circumference by how long you crochet the hat piece, gauge is not extremely important for this project.

Finishing
-
Fold the piece in half, with the right sides together Close the seam with whip-stitches, slip-stitches, or single crochets. This is the back seam.
-
Now fold the hat in half again, and position the seam that you just closed at the back of the hat. Use the same method to close the seam at the top of the hat.
-
Fold up bottom edge of hat to make a cuff, if you choose. It should now have a square shape to it.
-
Follow the directions for the pom-poms at the end of the pattern, and tie to the corners of the hat.
Pom-Poms
Note: This is the way that I make pom-poms. You may have a different way that you prefer, and should use whichever way you like best.
-
Using a 4” piece of cardboard, and matching or coordinating yarn, wrap the yarn around the cardboard many times. Wrap it more times than you may think is necessary, so that your pom-pom is nice and full. Cut yarn to separate from skein.
-
Cut a 12” piece of yarn from the skein and lay it down. Gently slide the wrapped yarn off of the cardboard, and lay it on top of the yarn with the looped ends situated perpendicular to it, keeping it in the same shape and position as it was on the cardboard. It should be a bunch of loops, but stacked somewhat neatly and laying on top of the 12” piece of yarn.
-
Carefully bring the yarn ends from the 12” piece up and around, and tie it in a knot. Make sure you pull it as tight as possible before securing the knot.
-
With a scissors, cut all of the loops in the pom-pom. Fluff it out, and trim any uneven ends. Using the tails from the piece that tied the pom-pom, secure it to the top of the hat.
-
Weave in ends. You’re finished!
