Visor
Notes:
- These instructions are for the visor for all sizes. For the smaller sizes, you may choose to skip rows 4 & 5, and move to row 6 after you’re finished working row 3. This is just an option, and would make the visor a more appropriate length for the smaller sizes. By all means, if you’d like a longer visor, work all rows for any size.
- Row2, and all even numbered visor rows, will be worked as “deep single crochet stitches.” When working these stitches, you’ll be working them into the previous row. This means you will be working the stitches around 2 rows of stitches, which makes a nice, sturdy visor.
Row 1: Ch 1. Reverse slip stitch in each st across, moving to the right, approximately half way around the hat.
Row 2: Ch 1. Skip 1st st, sc in next 2 sts, 2sc in next st, sc in each st until last 5 sts, 2sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog in last 2 sts.
Row 3: Ch 1. Reverse slip st in each st back to right side.
Row 4: Ch 1. Skip 1st st, sc in each st until you reach middle of visor sts, 2sc in next st, sc in each st until last 2 sts, sc2tog in last 2 sts.
Row 5: Ch 1. Reverse slip st in each st back to right side.
Row 6: Ch 1, sc in each st across. {NOTE: If you’d like your visor any longer than this, repeat rows 5 & 6 until it’s the length that you’d like.}
Do not fasten off.
Last round: 2sc in corner st of brim, sc evenly down side of brim, sc in each st around bottom of hat, sc evenly up other side of brim, 2sc in corner st of brim. Slip st to join to 1st or 2nd st on front of brim.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Visor Strap
Note:
The strap length can be adjustable according to preference. Crochet a chain that is approximately the correct length to reach from one side of the hat, just outside the visor edge, to the other side in the same place. Add 2 more chains for edge stitch.
Row 1: Dc in 3rd ch from hook, *dc in next ch; repeat from * across.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across, sc evenly down short edge of strap, sc in each “left over loop” from ch sts, sc evenly up short edge of strap. Join to first sc.
Fasten off.
Place your finished strap on hat, laying it where you’d like it to sit.
Use a piece of yarn to mark where your buttons should be attached so that they can hold strap in place.
Attach buttons with matching yarn.
Use the spaces in between the dc sts as button holes, and secure strap to hat.
