Notes
1. The ties for this hat can be made in several ways. I have directions for braided ties. You can also attach several strands to the two front corners and make, and then tie a few knots along the length of those strands. Or, you can use a decorative ribbon for the ties instead.
2. This hat is shown with a color blocking design. To include a striping design, just change colors as desired. For the hat shown, I divided the hat into 3 sections, with the contrasting color in the center. Thin stripes also look very nice, along with a solid one-color hat.
3. I prefer the Long Tail Cast On for this hat. This cast-on method creates the first row of knitting during the cast on which is the reason that row 1, and odd-numbered rows, are the wrong side. If you have another method that you prefer, please keep this in mind.
4. When the hat is in progress, it will be in the shape of a rectangle. Once you fold it in half and sew the back seam, it will be in the shape of a square.

Knit Baby Hat Pattern
Hat
Using the Long Tail Cast On:
CO 46 sts.
Row 1: P2, *K2, P2; repeat from * across. (46 sts)
Row 2: K2, *(P2, K2); repeat from * across. (46 sts)
Row 3-5: Repeat rows 1 and 2.
Row 6: Knit each stitch across. (46 sts)
Row 7: Purl each stitch across. (46 sts)
Repeat rows 6 and 7 until hat measures approximately 5.5-6 inches.
NOTE: If you want to make a multi-colored, striped, or color-blocked design, change colors as desired. For the hat pictured, I divided the hat into thirds and did a contrasting color block in the center third.
Bind off, leaving a tail to sew back seam.
Fold the hat in half. Using the tail left from the bind off, sew the back seam. I typically use the mattress stitch, but you can use any method that you prefer. Weave in ends.
Ties
Using matching yarn, or contrasting yarn, cut 6 lengths that are each approximately 24 inches long (or desired length for size).
Take 3 of those strands and fold them in half. Take the folded end of the strands and insert them through one of the front corners of the bonnet (until about 1-2 inches of the folded end is through), going in between two of the stitches. Take the loose ends of those strands and pull them through the loop of the folded end. Pull tight.
You will now have 6 strands hanging from the front corner of the bonnet. Divide those into 3 groups of 2 strands, and make a basic braid. Knot the end of the braid and trim ends.
Repeat for the other corner of the bonnet. Weave in ends.
