This cute slouchy hat free knitting pattern is an incredibly easy project that’s worked on single point needles. It’s a perfect hat for babies, boys, girls, women, and men, and it’s a great knitting pattern for beginners!

Abbreviations
CO: cast on
St: stitch
K: Knit
K2tog: knit two stitches together as one (decrease)
P: Purl
M1: make 1 (increase)

3.5-3.75 sts/inch in Rib Stitch
Notes
1. This stitch has a significant amount of stretch to it. If you’d like a tight-fitting hat, consider working a smaller size, but increasing the length to the more appropriate length.
2. This hat can be made as a slouchy hat, or as a beanie style hat. To make it a slouchy style hat, work the length of the hat longer than the length indicated for each size. Typically, adding an additional 1-2 inches will give it an appropriate amount of “slouch.”
3. The slouchy hat shown in the pictures has an added pom-pom embellishment. I like to use a Clover Pom-Pom maker, but you can use any pom-pom making method that you like!
Knit Slouchy Hat Pattern
Child
Using size 8 needles, CO 68 stitches, using the method of your choice (the hat pictured was made with the long tail cast on).
Row 1-6: *K1, P1; repeat from * across. (68 sts)
Change to size 10 needles.
Row 7: *K2, P2; repeat from * across to last st, m1, purl last st. (69 sts)
Row 8: *K2, P2; repeat from * across to last st, knit last st. (69 sts)
Repeat row 8 until hat measures 6.5-7 inches from cast-on edge. On the last row, purl the last 2 sts together. (68 sts at the end of the last row)
NOTE: This is where you can adjust the length of your hat. If you’d like it shorter or longer, work fewer or more rows, allowing a little extra length during the crown shaping.
Crown Shaping
Row 1: *K2, k2tog; repeat from * across. (36 sts) Row 2: Purl each st across. (36 sts)
Row 3: *K1, k2tog; repeat from * across. (24 sts) Row 4: Purl each st across. (24 sts)
Row 5: *K2tog; repeat from * across. (12 sts)
Row 6: Purl each st across. (12 sts)
Row 7: *K2tog; repeat from * across. (6 sts)
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail to sew the seam.
Thread yarn onto a tapestry needle, string through remaining sts on needle, and pull tight.
Sew back seam.
Weave in ends.

NOTE: For a hat that will fit a larger adult, use the same directions, but increase the length to about 8-8.5 inches. (A little bit longer for a slouchy hat style.)
Using size 8 needles, CO 80 stitches, using the method of your choice (the hat pictured was made with the long tail cast on).
Row 1-6: *K1, P1; repeat from * across. (80 sts)
Change to size 10 needles.
Row 7: *K2, P2; repeat from * across to last st, m1, purl last st. (81 sts)
Row 8: *K2, P2; repeat from * across to last st, knit last st. (81 sts)
Repeat row 8 until hat measures 7 inches from cast-on edge {for large adult, work until the hat is about 8 inches from cast-on edge}. On the last row, purl the last 2 sts together. (80 sts at the end of the last row)
NOTE: This is where you can adjust the length of your hat. If you’d like it shorter or longer, work fewer or more rows, allowing a little extra length during the crown shaping.
Crown Shaping
Row 1: *K2, k2tog; repeat from * across. (60 sts) Row 2: Purl each st across. (60 sts)
Row 3: *K1, k2tog; repeat from * across. (40 sts) Row 4: Purl each st across. (40 sts)
Row 5: *K2tog; repeat from * across. (20 sts) Row 6: Purl each st across. (20 sts)
Row 7: *K2tog; repeat from * across. (10 sts) Row 8: Purl each st across. (10 sts)
Row 9: *K2tog; repeat from * across. (5 sts)
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail to sew the seam. Thread yarn onto a tapestry needle, string through remaining sts on needle, and pull tight.
Sew back seam.
Weave in ends.
