Supplies
Worsted Weight Yarn
Red Heart Comfort Worsted Weight; tan, red, and white
Size H (5 mm) Crochet Hook
Tapestry Needle
Two buttons for eyes
Abbreviations
Ch: chain
St: stitch
Sl: slip
Beg: beginning
Sc: single crochet
Sc2tog: single crochet next 2 stitches together (decrease)
Dc: double crochet
2dc: work two double crochet stitches in the next stitch (increase)
Hdc: half double crochet
Note
The chain stitches at the beginning of rounds do not count as a stitch. When joining at end of rounds, join to first stitch.

Newborn to 3 Months
Gauge
Approximately 2.5-2.75 sts/inch. Please check your gauge to ensure an accurate finished size.

Sock Monkey Hat Free Crochet Pattern
Hat
With White yarn
Ch 2.
Round 1: 12dc in 2nd ch from hook. Join. (12 sts)
Round 2: Ch 2. 2dc in same st, *2dc in next st; repeat from * around. Join. (24 sts)
Change to Red yarn
Round 3: Ch 2. Dc in same st, 2dc in next st, *dc in next st, 2dc in next st; repeat from * around. Join. (36 sts)
Change to Tan yarn
Round 4-7: Ch 2. Dc same st, *dc in next st; repeat from * around. Join. (36 sts)
{NOTE: This is where you can adjust the length of your hat. If you’d like it shorter or longer, work fewer or more rounds.}
Fasten off.
Earflaps
Find the approximate center of one side of the hat. Count 3 sts to the right, and attach tan yarn.
Row 1: Sc in same st, sc in next 7 sts. Ch 1, turn. (8 sts)
Row 2: Sc2tog, sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog. Ch 1, turn. (6 sts)
Row 3: Sc in each of 6 sts. Ch 1, turn. (6 sts)
Row 4: Sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog. Ch 1, turn. (4 sts)
Row 5: Sc in each of 4 sts. Ch 1, turn. (4 sts)
Row 6: Sc2tog twice. (2 sts)
Fasten off.
Trim
Attach tan yarn to the back center stitch. Chain 1.
Round 1: Sc in each stitch around the entire hat. When you are working up and down the sides of the earflaps, work the single crochet stitches evenly across those sections. Continue around until you reach the first stitch, and fasten off.
Weave in ends.

Ears {make 2}
With Tan yarn:
Ch 3.
Round 1: 11dc in 3rd chain from hook. Join. (12 sts) {The 2 first skipped chains count as 1 double crochet stitch.}
Round 2: Ch 1, turn. Hdc in same st, *hdc in next st; repeat from * around. (12 sts)
Fasten off, leaving a tail to secure the ear to the hat.
Using the yarn tails from fastening off, and a tapestry needle, secure ears to each side of the hat. Weave in ends.
Mouth
With Red yarn:
Ch 9.
Round 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 6 chs, 2sc in the last ch. (Now you will be working in the remaining open loops from the beginning chain) Sc in next 7 chs, 2sc in the last ch. Join with white yarn. (18 sts)
Round 2: Ch 1. Sc in same st, sc in next 7 sts, 2sc in next st, sc in next 8 sts, 2sc in next st. Join. (20 sts)
Round 3: Ch 1. Sc in same st, sc in next 8 sts, 2sc in next st, sc in next 9 sts, 2sc in next st. Join. (22 sts)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail to secure to piece to the hat.
Secure mouth to the hat with the long yarn tail, and attach two buttons for the eyes.
Ties
Cut a 36-inch length of each yarn color (or length desired). Hold the 3 strands together and fold them in half. Insert the end that is folded into the bottom edge of the earflap until that end it a couple inches through. Take the loose ends of the yarn strands and pull them through the loop. Pull tight, and then braid the strands. Tie a knot at the end of the braid to secure.
Repeat for the other earflap.
