If you’re looking for a fun and easy knitting pattern, this Beginner Knit Cowl Pattern is perfect! It uses one simple stitch and is worked flat so that even the most novice knitter can whip one up!
Beginner Knit Cowl Pattern
Supplies
Approximately 250-300 yards of worsted weight yarn. Some of my favorites include:
Cloudborn Superwash Merino
Malabrigo Merino Worsted (one of my all-time favorites!)
Vanna’s Choice Premium Acrylic (a great easy-care choice)
Size US 15 knitting needles
Yarn Needle
Scissors
Abbreviations
CO: cast on St: stitch
K: knit
BO: bind off
Size
Average adult.
Gauge
Approximately 2.5-3 sts/inch.
Notes
- This length allows the cowl to sit around the neck wrapped once. If you’d like to make it longer, so that you can wrap it 2 times (or more), just continue knitting until it is the desired length. In that case, be sure to order extra yarn to make up for the added length/size.
An ad-free printable PDF instant download version of this pattern is also available. :)

Easy Cowl Knitting Pattern
Cast on 40 sts.
Row 1: Knit.
Repeat row 1 until the cowl measures approximately 29 inches. If you are making your cowl extra long, to be wrapped around twice, continue knitting until it reaches your desired length.
Cast off. Weave in ends.
Bring the two short ends together and use a basic whip stitch, mattress stitch, or another method of your choice to close the loop.
Not only is this cowl easy to knit, but it’s awesome for gift-giving! It’s also perfectly suitable for men so you can make one for the hubby, boyfriend, brother, or any other dude in your life.
If you have an Etsy shop or a handmade business, finished versions of this cowl are fantastic to offer because they are so quick and easy to make, giving you a great margin if you price it right.

Thank you! I have been crocheting for 40+ years and am just starting to teach myself to knit (continental). I’ve just been practicing so far, but I think I will make this my first real project. Here goes!

Hi Wendy,
This will be a perfect first beginner project for you! When I used to teach knitting classes, this is the exact type of project that my students would learn with. Have fun with it. :-)
