The best handmade projects are the ones that can serve two, or even more, purposes. This free crochet pattern is for a ruffle headband cowl, all in one. Wear it either way you like, or make a matching pair.

Supplies
Worsted Weight Yarn (one main color, one contrasting color); I used Vanna’s Choice yarn in Dusty Blue & Dusty Purple
Size H crochet hook
Size I crochet hook
Yarn needle

Ch: chain
St: stitch
Sc: single crochet Sk: skip

The stitch design used in this headband has a significant amount of stretch. The headband is worked lengthwise, so it is very adjustable to size preference. When working to the specified or desired size, make sure to pull/stretch the headband to see the true width.

The directions are for two rows of ruffles. If you want more, just continue to add the desired number of ruffle rows as the first two were added.
Ruffle Headband & Cowl–Child Size
Headband/Cowl
With a size I crochet hook, ch 16.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook. *Ch 1, skip next ch, sc in next ch; repeat from * across.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. *Sc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, skip next st; repeat from * across. Sc in edge st. Repeat row 2 until piece measures 20-21 inches WHEN STRETCHED.
Fasten off.
Slip stitch the two short ends together to seam.
Ruffle
Turn the headband so that the seam is horizontal.
With a size H crochet hook, join yarn to the stitch on the right edge, directly behind the seam.
Row 1: Work 4sc in each st across to the other edge of the headband.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Repeat for the second ruffle, this time directly in front of the seam. The seam should then be sitting between the two rows of ruffles.
If you’d like more ruffles, continue to repeat this row until you have the desired number of ruffle rows.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
