This elegant free knitting pattern makes a cute eyelet lace hat with a slightly slouchy style. It’s really fun to make and is perfect for fall, winter, and spring.
Free Knitting Pattern Eyelet Lace Hat
Supplies
Worsted Weight Yarn. Here are some of my favorites:
This gorgeous wool tweed yarn
A beautiful tonal merino yarn
A soft, easy-care yarn
US 8 and US 10 16″ circular knitting needles (you have to see these gorgeous needles!)
US 10 double point needles (also beautiful needles!)
Tapestry Needle
Abbreviations
CO: cast on
BO: bind off
St: stitch
K: knit
P: purl
Yo: yarn over
K2tog: knit two stitches together as one (decrease)
Sizes
Toddler (fits 19.5-21”)
5T to Adult (fits 21-22.5”).
Gauge
Approximately 3 stitches per inch in Eyelet Lace pattern.
Eyelet Lace Stitch
Eyelet Lace:
Round 1: *K2tog, yo; repeat from * around.
Round 2: Knit each st around.
Round 3: Knit each st around.
Round 4: *Yo, k2tog; repeat from * around.
Round 5-8: Knit each st around.
Note
- The ribbed edge/band of this hat has a good amount of stretch to it and will be narrower than the body of the hat. You can also make this section longer or shorter by working fewer or more rounds, before beginning the body of the hat.
- The length of this hat is perfectly adjustable to preference, and can easily be made slouchier. If you’d like it less slouchy, work the body of the hat to a shorter length. If you’d like it slouchier, work the body of the hat to a longer length.
- When working the crown section of the hat, change to double point needles when there are too few stitches to fit comfortably around the circular needle (if you have used a circular needle, instead of double points throughout).
- Please keep in mind that the hat sizes are based on average ages/head sizes.

Knit Hat Pattern
Toddler
CO 64 sts onto US 8 needles.
Round 1-9: *K3, P1; repeat from * around. (64 sts)
Change to larger needles.
Round 10: Knit each stitch around. (64 sts)
Round 11: Knit each stitch around. (64 sts)
Begin Eyelet Lace Pattern (see stitch directions on page 2). Work until hat measures approximately 7-8 inches (or desired length)
(NOTE: This is where you can adjust the amount of “slouch” in the hat. If you’d like it more or less slouchy, work this section to a shorter or longer length.
Crown Decreases
Round 1: *K2, k2tog; repeat from * around. (48 sts)
Round 2: Knit each stitch around. (48 sts)
Round 3: *K1, k2tog; repeat from * around. (32 sts)
Round 4: Knit each stitch around. (32 sts)
Round 5: *K2tog; repeat from * around. (16 sts)
Round 6: Knit each stitch around. (16 sts)
Round 7: *K2tog; repeat from * around. (8 sts)
Fasten off by cutting yarn, and threading the yarn tail onto a tapestry needle. String the needle through the remaining stitches on the needles, and pull tight.
Weave in ends.
5T-Adult
CO 68 sts onto US 8 needles.
Round 1-9: *K3, P1; repeat from * around. (68 sts)
Change to larger needles.
Round 10: Knit each stitch around. (68 sts)
Round 11: Knit each stitch around. (68 sts)
Begin Eyelet Lace Pattern (see stitch directions on page 2). Work until hat measures approximately 8-8.5 inches (or desired length)

Round 5: *K2tog; repeat from * around. (17 sts)
Round 6: Knit each stitch around. (17 sts)
Round 7: Knit first st, *k2tog; repeat from * around. (9 sts)
Fasten off by cutting yarn, and threading the yarn tail onto a tapestry needle. String the needle through the remaining stitches on the needles, and pull tight.
Weave in ends.
